Cottages with a past
What are now cosy and sumptuous holiday cottages were once the barn and outbuildings for a 17th century Lake District farmhouse. The buildings have been tastefully renovated by owners Sarah and Stewart with the original features preserved and plenty of interesting discoveries made along the way. The impressive stone fireplaces and quirky nooks and crannies add to the overall experience, and the traditional Cumbrian stone walls of the cottages will keep you snug and warm in winter or cool and fresh in summer.
Each cottage is truly unique and has been decorated and furnished with a keen eye for practicality and plenty of thoughtful luxurious touches, from the dramatic chandeliers to the huge comfortable beds, complete with sumptuous bedding that will seduce you into the soundest of sleeps.
If you spot Stewart and Sarah then ask them about the renovations, they’ll be happy to talk you through what they did, share stories of the highs and lows, and show you plenty of before and after photos.
The perfect Lake District retreat
In this quiet corner of the Lake District, it’s easy to feel like you’ve tumbled through a time warp back to a quieter, simpler, time as you step through the cottage door, but the modern world is just a click away with free wifi at your fingertips and all the mod cons you’d expect in the cottage.
There is secure parking, and each cottage has a private outdoor area that boasts views of the stunning gardens and the Lake District fells beyond. You are welcome to explore the extensive gardens each evening between 6 and 8pm and maybe pick up a few gardening tips along the way and, if you’re here during the spring and summer months, don’t be surprised if you get offered a basket of fresh goodies from the garden to go with your evening meal.
Keep a keen eye out for the local wildlife too – the gardens have been developed with wildlife in mind and attract deer, badgers, foxes, otters and a huge variety of birds. For those with a specific interest in wildlife then there are plenty of local nature reserves nearby, including RSPB Leighton Moss with its starling murmurations, bitterns, and bearded tits.
What makes us different?
